On a sunny September 29th, 2012 the Band travelled west to the Ripley Fall Fair. It was a long parade but a short march, and we started off with Caber Feidh. Afterwards, the Highlanders played massed-band tunes in a circle with Brussels and Kincardine, and that was that for 2012. (Photos by Janice Needham)

On November 18, 2012 the Band marched up Clinton Street to aid in the production of a CBC special devoted to Teeswater. Actor Jonny Harris ('Murdoch's Mysteries') was escorted — in fine style — up to the door of the Town Hall by the Highlanders. December 19, 2013 was the date of the Band's Christmas "practice". Terry kindly invited us all over to his house. Some hard-core pipers (and a couple of keen drummers) gathered for a quick run through the new tunes.

The weather did not cooperate for our first Concert-on-the-Lawn of the season, on May 22nd. Nevertheless we played with spirit. No marching yet though.

On July 17, 2014 the Band played out on the lawn of the Teeswater Town Hall for the third time this season. There were many spectators on hand, the annual United Church Pie and Ice-cream Social being an added inducement to attend. We travelled up to Orillia on Saturday, July 19th for the Scottish Festival. After participating in the long (downhill) parade at noon, we had a few hours to rest and walk around before our competition at 3:40 p.m. As it happened, the medley went off with hardly a hitch, and our cutoff was almost perfect. We ended up in First Place, and had the honour of marching off the field before all of the other bands. Who would have thought?

On August 9, 2014 the Band played at the wedding of Cameron Grant and Ashley Kraemer on the Kraemer farm near Mildmay. Dave McDonald was our capable Acting Pipe Major and Drum Sergeant.

It was uncharacteristically mild on November 11th as the Band marched up Clinton Street to the Town Hall.

On July 16th we played outside the Town Hall for the third time this year. This concert coincided with the United Church Pie and Ice-cream Social, so there were quite a few spectators on hand. We gathered in Clinton, Ontario on July 18th to play at a party held for Brittany, Scott's stepdaughter. There was a good turnout of pipers and drummers and the many guests seemed to appreciate our half-hour performance. On Sunday, August 9th we travelled to Fergus to take part in the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games. At 11:30 o'clock we played our medley (and Scotland the Brave set) in the beer tent in front of a small number of spectators, and then marched in a massed band at 1:00 o'clock. At 4:00 we finished up with a reprise of the massed band performance. It was a sunny, relaxed afternoon. On Saturday, August 22nd the Teeswater Highlanders marched at the head of the Fair Parade up Clinton Street to the Fairgrounds. The weather was fine, and many spectators lined the way. In the afternoon we reassembled in front of the Community Centre and presented a half-hour concert, running through pretty much all the tunes Cameron can play ... plus a few he cannot. On August 29th we travelled to Kincardine to perform in the afternoon at the Gathering of the Bands. We played our medley and various other tunes to some acclaim, at least it seemed like acclaim. Our stops were good, and nobody fell over. It was a happy occasion, with some spontaneous dancing breaking out among the pipers. Where will it all end? (Photos by Gord Ripley)

Port Elgin was a busy place on September 7th. There seemed to be many more people lining up for the Labour Day Parade in Port Elgin, and lots of spectators along the way. On September 12, 2015 the Band travelled to Blyth, Ontario to play at the Steam Thresher Show, an annual event. We performed twice during the afternoon, and then led the parade of threshers (slowly) around the fairgrounds. It was a pretty tiring day, but enjoyable, and the weather -- for once -- cooperated. On September 19th a mini-band comprised of Mary O'Malley, Laura McDonald, Jerry Mowbray, Gord Ripley, Joy Rutherford and Bruce MacDonald travelled to Belgrave (Ontario) to lead the 2015 Belgrave School Fair Parade. Rain threatened, then -- just as the parade started -- the heavens opened. It was a fairly short march to the arena, where we were treated to beef-on-a-bun and slices of homemade pie. On September 26th we particpated again in the Ripley Fall Fair. As is usually the case in Ripley, it was a beautiful Fall day. The route was short, and if our tone and execution was not the very best, the crowds were nevertheless appreciative. At 1:00 p.m. Bruce directed the three participating bands (Kincardine, Brussels, Teeswater) in a brief Massed Band performance. And then it was home, with a stop first at the Holyrood General Store.

One week before the Tiverton Fair Parade (October 3rd) the long-range forecast called for sunshine and mild temperatures, but it was not to be. On Saturday, Hurricane Joaquin decided to veer towards Southern Ontario, and Tiverton reverted to type, with a bitter wind blowing up the route. On Saturday, January 23rd the Band presented a Robbie Burns Concert/Ceilidh in the Teeswater Town Hall. A few days earlier we held a final rehearsal and ironed out some glitches. The Guelph Legion was a busy place on Sunday afternoon, September 20th. A number of bands took part in the Guelph Scottish Festival, including us. We played our medley and the Scotland the Brave set, and generally (I think) did reasonably well. Our stops were good, in any case. On Saturday, July 2, 2016 the Highlanders led the 'Parade of the Clans' up the main street of Kincardine. It was a bright, sunny day and there were plenty of spectators (many of whom would later be attending the Kincardine Scottish Festival and games. On Saturday, August 13th Bruce and Debbie MacDonald were hosts for a barbecue at their farm on the 8th of Culross. We always look forward to this event, and it is always a treat. The sky was grey and cloudy, foretelling rain after a long dry spell, so we moved into the drive shed for the most part. Margaret arrived in costume (at least I think it was costume) and added a nice touch of colour. The fare was excellent, as usual, and afterwards Mary, Leah, Bruce and Alan entertained with smallpipes, fiddle and guitar. It was over too soon, of course. (Photos by Gord Ripley)

The Teeswater Highlanders Triathlon Team entered the Goderich Triathlon on Sunday, August 21st and did well, finishing just short of the podium (ie. the podium was about forty feet from the finish line).

On Saturday, January 30th Band members and friends met at the farm home of Alan and Elizabeth Grant to celebrate Robbie Burns Day. It was a convivial gathering with lots of good things to eat and lots of conversation. Bruce addressed the haggis in his usual exemplary fashion. To the Haggis! As always, it was a beautiful sunny day in Ripley on Saturday, September 24th. This year we marched near the end of the Fall Fair Parade, and then played a short concert at 1:00 p.m. along with the Kincardine Pipe Band.

The weather in Tiverton was 'as expected' on Saturday, October 1st: cool and threatening rain. But it wasn't snowing, and the spectators along the route were cheerful and appreciative. This was our last parade of the season. (Photos by Gord Ripley)

It wasn't snowing on November 11th as the Band marched down Clinton Street to the Town Hall, but it was cold enough, and windy too. The auditorium was full to overflowing this year, and many people gathered outside after the service to watch the laying of the wreaths. Cherie Leslie and Jane McQuarrie of the Teeswater Town Hall Committee attended our regular practice on November 24, 2016 to accept a cheque in the amount of $1177.30. A very successful and well-attended Christmas Canata was held at Teeswater Presbyterian Church on December 18, 2016. Members of Teeswater Highlanders pipe band take time out from their practice to present a cheque for $ 1080 to Pam McKnight (Teeswater Town Hall Committee) to support the future operation of the Teeswater Town Hall as a resource for community activities and artistic performances. The money was donated for this purpose by the members of the audience who attended the concerts put on by the pipe band. The town hall is used by many community groups and organizations for a wide variety of activities and functions. In the case of the pipe band, it provides space for teaching classes in piping and drumming to members of the community as well as a location for band practice and rehearsal throughout the year. On August 13th, 2017 we marched in the Massed Band (twice) and performed our entertainment set at the Fergus Scottish Festival. We played pretty well, by all accounts, and the afternoon had a relaxed and sunny feel. The judges liked our bonnets! (Photos by Deb MacDonald)

On August 20th, 2017 the Teeswater Highlanders Triathlon Team (Scott Macaulay, Dave Pritchard and Gord Ripley) entered the Relay event at the Goderich Triathlon. Scott's valiant swim (1st place in our age grouping) gave us a big boost, while Dave and Gord both bettered their times from last year. On September 4th, 2017 we participated once again in the Port Elgin Labour Day Parade. The route was shorter by a block this year and things went fairly smoothly. The Pipe Major remarked that we sounded 'pretty good', high praise from a reliable source. Rain threatened, but did not materialize. Where did the summer go?

In 1998 the Canadian Government officially proclaimed the last Sunday of September of every year as Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day. On September 24th, Joy and Grant participated in the memorial ceremony in Ottawa.

On Saturday, September 30th we marched in the annaul Ripley Fall Fair Parade. It was coolish in the morning, so we decided to wear our sweaters. Alan did a fine job as acting Pipe Major, and by some accounts at least we sounded pretty good. Remembrance Day, 2017

On Friday, January 26th we celebrated Robbie Burn's birthday at the home of Alan and Elizabeth Grant. It was a lively and well-attended affair, as usual. Bruce Macdonald addressed the haggis in fine style, assisted by pipers Scott Macaulay and Kelly Church, and bearer Dave McDonald. After a sumptuous supper, guests were entertained on smallpipes, guitar and harp by Bruce, Mary O'Malley, Joy Rutherford, Alan Grant and Jane McQuarrie.

On Saturday, June 30th the Band marched in the Lucknow Homecoming Parade. It was a hot, sunny day and a large number of friendly spectators lined the long parade route. Nobody fell over, even when we played our 9/8s near the end of the march. (Photos by Karen Archibald and Gord Ripley)

On Friday, July 20, 2018 the Band presented an outdoor concert near the historic Point Clark lighthouse, in Point Ckark. Despite the lingering threat of a downpour, more than three hundred people brought lawnchairs and and sat in cars to watch the hour-long performance. It was a success by any standard. Kincardine Massed Bands, August 25, 2018 - This year we were the first band up in the afternoon. Our set went fairly well, and Bruce received a number of compliments regarding our play and our tune selection. And nobody fell over. Cambridge and Sarnia both sounded good. A large number of hot dogs were consumed (by us). In the evening the Highlanders marched down to the start-line of the Massed Band playing Jimmy Findlater. On September 2, 2018 Bruce and Deborah MacDonald hosted their annual Band Barbecue. How time flies! It seems like only a few months ago we sat down at our last barbecue. This year, happily, the weather cooperated. Bruce's hamburgers were superb, and the pot-luck worked out very well, with more than enough for everyone. There was lots of lively conversation, and in the words of the late Velda Douglas, a goodly time was had by all. After supper, the small-pipers, silver chanter players, guitarists and drummers got together to run through the repertoire. On Saturday, May 4th, 2019 some Band members competed at the 10th Annual Western Branch Kiwanis Indoor Piping and Drumming Competition. Joy Rutherford placed 1st in Junior Piobaireachd, Grade 4 (judged by Bob Worral). Kelly Church was entered in Novice Piobaireachd and Grade 4 March. Tim Metcalfe placed Fifth in his very first competition (Grade 5 March), and Ross McLennan placed 7th (out of ten, Grade 5 March). The quartet (Alan, Kelly, Joy and Scott) placed 2nd. When we lined up for the Teeswater Reunion Parade on Monday, August 5th, 2019 we were in three rows of six each, plus the drum corps. Eighteen pipers! It was a very long parade, some say almost two hours, but we were at the front and missed it. For the most part our marching was crisp and our wheeling pretty near faultless (or so we imagine). On Saturday, September 15, 2018 we marched at the front of the Lucknow Fair Parade. Good weather, a short route and lots of enthusiatic spectators made for a pleasant outing. Afterwards, a few of us (Bruce MacDonald, Alan Grant, Gord Ripley, Lisa Jamieson, Kelly Church, Doug Fleet and Jerry Fleet) drove up to Holyrood and played in the parking lot of the Holyrood General Store for twenty minutes or so. On Sunday, November 11, 2018 we participated once again in the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Teeswater Town Hall. The weather was typical for November, perhaps a little bit on the cold side. Bruce MacDonald played The Unknown Warrior at the Centoaph. This lament was composed by Pipe Major George S. MacLennan of the Gordon Highlanders. It was written as a tribute to those who were killed during the First World War and have no known graves. Then we marched back up Clinton Street to the Fire Hall. Fergus Scottish Festival, August 11, 2019 - On Sunday, August 11th we travelled to Fergus for a low-stress day of performing at the Fergus Scottish Festival. The massed-band march at noon was predictably a shambles, but by 4:00 p.m. the final march-on showed definite improvement. Our performance outside the Tea Tent went well, and (the ultimate test of our showing) nobody fell over. On September 1st, Highlanders and friends gathered at the farm of Bruce and Derborah MacDonald to enjoy the annual Band Barbecue. This year we arrived early with our various instruments and jammed until supper at 6:00 o'clock. There was plenty of potluck food: Bruce served up excellent cheeseburgers and delicious corn-on-the-cob. Mary O'Malley brought a big pot of beans, and there were salads of many sorts, multiple desserts, fried chicken and Bruce Archibald's blueberry pie. Nobody went home hungry! (Photos by Gord Ripley)

On September 15th we travelled to Guelph to participate in the Guelph Scottish Festival, as we have done for many years now. Unusually, the weather was not co-operating, and it was raining pretty hard in the morning. Bruce had taken the precaution of asking people to bring 'alternate' instruments, just in case we ended up playing indoors at the Legion. Sure enough, by noon a decision had been make to play inside, and the first massed band event was reduced to pipe majors and pipe sergeants only. Guelph led off the individual band performances, and set the tone for the rest of the day. And that tone was loud! The audience members seated around the auditorium were wincing in pain, though the band (Grade Three) was excellent. Our own set was introduced and ended by five pipers on bagpipes (Lisa, Gord, Ken, Jerry and Tim), but it was otherwise played on smallpipes, bodhran and guitar. Spectators who had been blugeoned into auditory submission all afternoon were appreciative, and showed it. The final massed band moved outside, and went off without a hitch. An interesting day. Ripley Fair Parade, September 21, 2019 - It rained cats and dogs on the Ripley Fall Fair Parade (September 21st) ... but true to form the sun made an appearance later in the day. Out on the street Bruce played the first three lines of Major Cox all by himself, and very nicely too, until the rest of the Band decided to join in. Unique, terrifying. Despite the weather there were lots of enthusiastic spectators lining the route. Lunch at the Legion was once again a highlight, and the concert at 1:00 p.m., with Kincardine, Brussels and Teeswater participating, went off well. (Photos by Gord Ripley)

Robbie Burns Night Concert, January 25, 2020 - On January 25, 2020 the Teeswater Highlanders (and friends) presented a Robbie Burns Night concert at the Teeswater Town Hall. Given the gloomy weather, it was well-attended, and the audience seemed to enjoy themselves. Vocalist Helen Tovey and her accompanist Deborah Morris were hits, as were harpers Jane McQuarrie and Sharon Johnston. Bruce's Address to a Haggis, always a favourite, was carried off in style. Doug Fleet was the Bearer, while the haggis was piped in by Joy Rutherford ... and piped back out by Ken McKinnon. Throughout the evening the small pipes and highland pipes sounded pretty good (from back-stage at least). Tim Metcalfe, Delmar Martin and Tristan Metcalfe showed a younger (and capable) side of the Band, and afterwards in the Lower Hall the 'refeshments' turned out to be a banquet, haggis included. As the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic shuts down the world in March, 2020 the Teeswater Highlanders -- like everyone else -- find themselves isolated and at home. No more Thursday practices, at least for a while, and possibly no events to play at, at least until September. So in the interim, we are practising at home. In mid-March Bruce Archibald wrote: 'Karen and I have one more day of self-isolation after returning from Australia early. I have been doing lots of in-house practicing. I’m working hard to get 'Leaving Port Askaig' up to standard'. And yes, Bruce is a left-handed piper. As the weather improved in April, Ross McLennan was playing his pipes every day at 4:00 p.m. on the lawn of his home in Wingham. Gord Ripley is trying to learn to relax his hands, and has been working on 'The Duck' in Jane's music room. Mary O'Malley finds isolation difficult, but she is surrounded by animals who like to listen to her practise. The ewe's name is 'Miss Muffet'. Margaret Hancock is still working, as she provides an essential service to her many home-care clients. She is practising 'Andrew Warnock', which she has been working on for three years. By the end of April, Kelly Church and Tim Metcalfe have been practising together via FaceTime for a week. It's possible, even with the lag. Ken McKinnon has lots of room to practise on his farm on the 4th of Culross. Leah says he is playing 'Amazing Graze', and you can just see his cattle in the background. In April Pipe Sergeant Alan Grant entertained his new neighbours when he played 'Owl's Hoot' and 'Amazing Grace' on the lawn of his home in Goderich. Bruce was laid to rest in Teeswater Cemetery on Saturday, April 25th. Doug Fleet and Margaret Hancock both attended the small ceremony, and Doug played the Lament. Scott and Wendy Macaulay visited Bruce's grave on the evening of April 27th. While Wendy watched, Scott played 'Going Home'. Bruce would have approved. Joy Rutherford found a nice day on the first weekend in May to blow the dust out of her pipes. Many people are unemployed, at least temporarily, but she is busier than ever. Because of the pandemic, Dave Pritchard's work is also keeping him fully occupied. For him, piping is necessarily on hold. Gone but not forgotten. Cameron Grant was sighted towards the end of May playing his pipes at a 'social distancing birthday party'. In July, Doug Fleet, Kelly Church and Jerry Fleet started practising together in Walkerton on Thursday nights. Rusty but enthusiatic, and entertainment for a few spectators.

During the Pandemic, June 2020 - After lunch on Father’s Day (June 21st) Alan and Cameron Grant put on a little concert for their family in Goderich. It was pretty awesome! On June 18th Al and Scott were pleased to have Dave Prichard join them for Thursday night practise at the Park House Park in Goderich. They piped to an audience and socialized between tunes, just like the old days. It was great!

Point Clark, September 2021 - On Sunday, September 5, 2021 the Teeswater Highlanders played in public for the first time in almost two years. There was no big crowd of spectators, but those on hand obviously enjoyed the tunes. In the absence of Pipe Major Alan Grant, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, Pipe Sergeant Scott MacAulay led the Band to the lighthouse. It was great to be back!
